For me, the power of this story lies in the familiar, the trust of one person believing in another, specifically the people you let into your home—electricians, painters, and plumbers.
I recently combined idea 7, the unexpected fortune, along with idea 5, end of a relationship, to create this idea: A sudden rash of break-ins brings her to his store over and over and over again, until it becomes obvious that he might be tripping the alarm on purpose—just to see her.
In another, they both reach for the last pair of gloves at the department store. A long journey is interrupted by a disaster. A fairy prince who decides to abandon his responsibilities to become a street musician. I can honestly say yes, that all of these stories have had a profound impact on my writing career, as they are, in my opinion, as flawless as stories can get.
But why would the emperor of Japan want to kill a lowly soldier? This is no easy task. Some do it quietly, almost without you even noticing, and some do it with high wire acts of imagination or intellect that make you into a breathless witness. When it comes to romance, a sense of humor is always a good idea.
Sometimes dreams come true, and sometimes those dreams are nightmares. The uneasy dynamics of race, class, and power especially when it comes to love and sex are nimbly explored here, and build to a devastating end. Was there something in their past that made them steal, made them vulnerable; was there an incident, some family member, an ongoing abuse?
Does that make me an authority? Enjoy a good whodunit? The story is, in the end, a testament to the power of a whole person--caustic, funny, articulate, alone, lost and found, cruel and loving--given life on the page. Write your story in a single sitting. This might be one of the few stories that actually made me cry.
But what keeps this story from being merely a dark tale of power gone awry is the way the protagonist handles her future, the way she forgives and moves on. Good writing is rewriting. What Makes Stories Stand Out Stories, more than any other artistic expression, have the power to make people care.
